Verizon Profit Surges 31 Percent

Posted in News on October 27th, 2008

On a day in which its news may be overshadowed by the report of two smaller telcos merging, telco giant Verizon Communications reported third quarter earnings that included a 31 percent hike in net income to about $1.67 billion, up from $1.27 billion for the same quarter last year. Total revenue was up 4.1 percent to $24.8 billion, but the strength, as usual, came from the wireless side of the business, as wireline revenue slid 1.7 percent to $12.2 billion.

Verizon lost about 1.19 million landlines during the third quarter, and DSL subscribers declined by about 96,000. On the bright side, Verizon reported 233,000 net subscriber additions for its FiOS TV offering and 225,000 new FiOS Internet customers. Broadband and video service revenue growth drove consumer ARPU in legacy Verizon wireline markets upward by 12.8 percent to $66.67.

Additionally, the company reported that Verizon Business raked in $5.4 billion in revenue, which inched up about 1.2 percent from the same quarter last year. And, while telecom industry watchers await further information this morning on Centurytel’s acquisition of Embarq, Verizon reiterated that its own rural-themed $28 billion acquisition of Alltel is on track to close by the end of this year, despite credit market turbulence.

Rackmount Ranger Answers Your Question.

Posted in Ask Rackmount Ranger on October 21st, 2008

Q: When I buy a 15Amp power strip, why does it say it only provides 12Amps?

A: I understand your confusion and will try to clear it up for you.

The standard power combination in use in the US is 15Amp/120VAC. We like to say the power strips are compatible with 15Amp/110-125VAC because the voltage can vary a little bit without affecting performance.

All power strips are “de-rated” by 80% to ensure you (or any user) does not try to get more out of it than it can supply. The remaining 20% is for things like “in-rush current” that can temporarily cause the power strip to exceed the maximum power available and trip the circuit breaker. For this reason, the maximum steady state power output you should expect to get from a 15Amp power strip is 12Amps (15 x 0.80).

Therefore, the most you should expect to actually use safely is 12Amps.

Until next time, Rackmount Ranger.

Rwanda Calls for Bids for E-Cabinet System

Posted in News on October 14th, 2008

By Edris Kisambira

October 14, 2008 — IDG News Service —

The Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RITA) has invited bids from IT consulting firms to develop, install, commission, implement training for and maintain an e-Cabinet system.

Currently, a majority of Rwanda’s Cabinet processes are manual, with piles of paper circulated each year. According to RITA, the Cabinet lacks systematic technology for monitoring agenda formulation and progress in meeting deliberations.

“This is a barrier to the assurance of the actual implementation of accountability, effectiveness and efficiency of the cabinet decisions,” read a statement issued by RITA.

By capturing all records relating to Cabinet processes electronically, the new system will help eliminate the need for government ministries to send hard copies of memoranda to the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs and to each Cabinet member.

“This will result in a comprehensive electronic archive and possibilities for the creation of new information resources, an improved, electronic means of tracking progress with implementing cabinet decisions,” the statement read.

The project’s consultant will be required to analyze the existing Cabinet processes and propose core technological, architectural and high-level business elements to be included in the specifications phase. The consultant must also identify operational security requirements, provide necessary hardware, and develop a dynamic and interactive Web site for the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs.

Funds for the project are derived from a World Bank grant to African governments to support ICT.
